The European Championship being pushed back to 2021 could prove to be a big stroke of luck for a number of young players. That extra year gives them more time to develop in the game.

Here is a look at three young players who could be huge stars by the time the European Championship comes around in 2021.

Kai Havertz

At the age of just 20, Kai Havertz has the world at his feet. The German has the potential to be the biggest name in the sport in the near future.

Havertz is the youngest player to reach 100 Bundesliga appearances. He broke into the first team at Bayer Leverkusen when he was 17 and since then he has been a key part of the starting XI.

The wunderkind is having another excellent season in Germany. His side Bayer Leverkusen are 6/5 in the betting on Bundesliga to finish in the top four, so there is a strong chance we will see him in the Champions League next season.

With seven caps to his name, Havertz is already a part of the German national team, but by the summer of 2021, the team could revolve around him.

Germany will be desperate to make up for their disappointment at the World Cup in 2018, and Havertz may be able to help them have a successful tournament.

Erling Braut Haaland

There was a whole host of major European clubs chasing Erling Braut Haaland’s signature in the January transfer window but it was Dortmund who snapped up the youngster.

Haaland has got off to a flyer at Dortmund. He has scored 13 goals in his opening 12 games in all competitions for the German club.

In order for us to see Haaland at the European Championship in 2021, Norway must overcome Path C in the playoffs, which includes Israel, Scotland and Serbia. With the help of their young striker, they have a good chance of qualifying for the finals, which would be a big boost for fans of the Norwegian.

Phil Foden

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has indicated on a number of occasions that he believes Phil Foden is a great talent.

The young Englishman has probably not featured as much as he would have liked for his side over the last 12 months. However, when he has been given a chance, he has impressed - the EFL Cup final being a perfect example, as he was named Man of the Match.

Foden should get much more football at Manchester City over the next year or so. David Silva is expected to leave the club in the summer and Foden could fill that void in the team.

The 20-year-old has featured at every age group for England: from under-16s to under-21s. It would have been unlikely that Gareth Southgate would have included him in his 23-man squad for Euro 2020. This may be very different in 2021 where he could be a major player.

The opening game of the European Championship in 2021 is set to take place on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 11.
