GOP Leaders Remain Silent On Donald Trump’s Indictment

GOP

Senior GOP Senators refrained from commenting on Former President Donald Trump’s indictment. Prosecutors have charged the former Republican president of keeping vital classified government documents in his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after Trump left the White House at the end of his presidency. GOP leader’s silence comes as Trump is the Republican Party frontrunner candidate for the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election.

Two senior Republican Senators, Minority Leaders Whip John Thune and Mitch McConnell have not issued any statements regarding Trump’s indictment. Their silence draws sharp differences from GOP leaders of the House of Representatives, who immediately and vehemently engaged in defending their 2024 Presidential candidate after the indictment row. Kevin McCarthy, Speaker of the House and member of the Republican Party, reacted to the indictment on his Twitter account, stating that it is a dark day for America.

The indictment is unethical of President Joe Biden against a leading opposition candidate. McCarthy further alleged that President Biden kept classified government documents over decades. He stated that Americans who believe in the rule of law like himself, consider the indictment a grave injustice against Trump. He also, along with other Republican members of the House views the indictment as an act of weaponization of power.

House And Senate GOP Leaders Have Reacted Separately On Trump Indictment

While GOP House leaders openly spoke out defending Trump after the indictment, GOP Senators did not often follow suit. Senator John Barrasso, of Wyoming, commented on Friday, stating that the indictment does seem like an unequal application of justice, however he also stated that nobody is beyond the reach of law, though some do appear so. Senator Mitch McConnel has not kept ties with Trump since the Capitol Hill riot on January 6, 2021. While former Republican Vice President Mike Pence too openly denounced Trump in a speech at Des Moines, Ohio.
