WNBA players walk off court during national anthem ahead of season opener

As the national anthem played on Saturday ahead of the WNBA’s season opener, players from both the teams, named Seattle Storm and New York Liberty walked off the court to their respective locker rooms and maintained a brief moment of silence.

This powerful act of acknowledgment was to honor Breonna Taylor, a Black woman who was shot dead in her twenty-sixth year when Louisville police were on a no-knock warrant related to a narcotics investigation.

“We are dedicating this season to Breonna Taylor, an outstanding EMT who was murdered over 130 days ago in her home,” Liberty’s Layshia Clarendon said before the game.

Clarendon went on to say that the season was also dedicated to the “Say Her Name” campaign, committed to say the name and fight for the Black women.

She emphasized the need for justice and dignity for all. Not just Clarendon, but Tampa Bay too honored Taylor and called for the arrest of the officers who shot her dead. She perceives this as an attempt to raise a voice for the people who are stifled with injustice and are left voiceless.
