Irrfan Khan Dies; Indian Actor Appeared In Crossover Hit ‘Slumdog Millionaire’

The world has fallen mute as the life of Pi comes to an end. Irrfan Khan, a superstar in his own right, breathed his last today.

Irrfan Khan’s Career

Despite his royal lineage, Irrfan Khan had to build his career from scratch. Starting off with some television soaps and some minor roles in movies, Khan got his first big break in Maqbool. Thereafter he gave his audience several movies that steered the very journey of Indian cinema.

However, his reach was not to be limited by geographical boundaries. The Namesake, Life of Pi, Jurassic World, Spider-Man- all Hollywood productions found him pivotal. Slumdog Millionaire, where he again played a vital role, even won multiple Academy Awards. It is no wonder that his death has invited eulogies from the best in the business worldwide.

Irrespective of the appraisal of the movies he acted in, his performance rarely failed to draw praise. Be it the circumspect widower from The Lunch Box, the wily gangster in Maqbool, or the law-abiding citizen in Paan Singh Tomar who finds himself on the wrong side of the law, Khan underplayed each character with the required degree of sensitivity.

The End

The movie Angrezi Medium was his last release. He had completed the shoot even while undergoing severe treatment for neuroendocrine cancer. The diagnosis was made sometime before and Irrfan had been valiantly fighting for the last two years. In his public message, upon discovery of the terminal disease, he said: “Little had I known that my search for rare stories would make me find a rare disease.” However, when it appeared that he had made recovery, he suddenly succumbed to an infection

The 54-year-old passed away Tuesday morning, leaving behind his wife and two young sons.
