For Roger Federer and tennis, that date and this game would have to happen, as it surely will for each and every competitor in every discipline.

After a stellar career that lasted over 25 years, 20 Grand Slam trophies, and a statesman’s position, Roger Federer said goodbye with one more match on Friday evening in the Laver Cup before retiring at age 41. His career as a pro player came to an end as he and his old adversary Rafael Nadal lost in pairs for Team Europe inside the Laver Cup to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe of Team World in the Laver Cup.

The fact that the winners, the numbers, as well as the scoreline were completely irrelevant and unimportant. And besides, the event revolved around the actual parting. Better yet, Roger Federer should bid adieu to tennis, the public, his rivals, and teammates. Naturally, Federer received a last message from each of those entities.
