A popular restaurant was damaged by a fire in Essex late Sunday night.

Firemen were called before 11 p.m. to Essex Seafood at 143 Eastern Avenue.

At the point when a NewsCenter 5 showed up on the scene, flames were shooting out of the restaurant as firemen on the rooftop attempted to extinguish the fire.

“Flames were coming out of the front door and through the roof,” said neighbor Bruce Conrad.

Conrad stated that he woke up to the sound of cops striking against his entryway. Only hours sooner, Essex Seafood had been doing takeout for Mother’s Day.

“We actually had our busiest Mother’s Day that we’ve had, but then it ended up being our worst one,” owner Howard Lane stated.

Lane has possessed Essex Seafood for a long time and was working at the restaurant only hours before the fire happened.

Lane said in spite of the hard work ahead and the doubt coronavirus keeps on causing, he anticipates remaking.

“I thought the virus was bad, and it is without a doubt. It’s bad but this just put the icing on the cake,” Lane stated. “Everything we’ve done here was to protect people from the virus and here we are now, we’re shut down today.”

The reason of the fire is under investigation.
