On Monday morning, Serbia woke up from sleep to disappointing news. Novak Djokovic’s attempt at making history in tennis had been destroyed. He was aiming to be the first male tennis player in over half a decade to win all the Grand slams in the calendar year.

Novak Djokovic Overcome By Daniil Medvedev

After all the earlier finals of the majors, the Serbian streets were filled with fireworks, blaring car horns, and people rejoicing on the streets. But on Monday, none of that was to be seen. Novak Djokovic, the No. 1 ranked player in the world fell to Daniil Medvedev from Russia in the finals of the United States Open.

The scores were 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. If Novak Djokovic had won, he would have won the U.S., Wimbled, French, and Australian Open in one year. The last person to achieve this feat was Rod Laver back in 1969. It would also have been his 21st singles title from Grand Slams. Currently, he is tied on 20 with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

The rabid fanbase that supports Novak Djokovic was very much split on the tennis legend’s next move should be. Some Serbian social media fans hoped that Djokovic would retire while still being the No. 1 player in the world. Others believed that Novak will come back and still offer more, and be known as the greatest player in tennis across all eras.

After the match, Djokovic could not hold back his tears as talked with the media from Serbia. He said that he was disappointed and sad over losing such an immense chance. He said that it was very difficult to be defeated at such a point. Boris Becker, ex-coach of Djokovic, said that Novak was not prepared mentally to make history.
