England Decimated By The Kiwis In Cricket World Cup 2023 Opener

Cricket World Cup

England had a disastrous start in the Cricket World Cup. Their title defense started with a resounding thrashing at the hands of New Zealand. It was billed as a rematch of the Cricket World Cup final 4 years ago. But it delivered little of the nail-biting finish of the epic at Lord’s 4 years ago. The Black Caps had eased to a win pursuing an imposing 283 runs. At the current Cricket World Cup opener, the Kiwis romped home with 13.4 over still to go. Stunning centuries by Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway ensured a convincing win.

Ravindra remained unbeaten on 123 while Conway amassed 152 for an imposing partnership of 273. It is the 4th– highest in the history of the Cricket World Cup. The unbeaten partnership rendered England’s formidable attack toothless.

Earlier England had struggled to make 282 in a lackluster performance at the wickets, losing 9 wickets in the process. Joe Root remained the highest scorer at 77. The English team was undone throughout their innings by a number of soft dismissals which halted their progress. The English team has to wait for their next game against Bangladesh at Dharamshala. The Cricket World Cup will continue with Pakistan facing off against the Dutch in the South Indian city of Hyderabad.

England Stare At An Early Exit In The Cricket World Cup

Despite the opening loss at the Cricket World Cup, England are still in with a chance, though it is their last. Their heavy defeat will have a negative implication on the net run rate, making it difficult for them to advance to the next round.

The total looked below part even at the halfway stage with England over 30 runs off the mark. The way that Ravindra and Conway performed, it seemed that the English were a hundred runs behind even at the 25-over mark. New Zealand’s Will Young was caught behind on the leg side off the bowling of Sam Curran without scoring. But that was all that England could do against the formidable batting display by the New Zealanders.
