Golf US Open 2020

The US Open, one of the biggest golf tournaments on the tour, will finally take place this year. After being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 120th edition of the competition will be underway next month.

The golf tournament was originally scheduled for June 18-21, being rescheduled exactly three months later, on September 17-20. It will take place at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, in New York.

It has a total of 7,477 yards, and 144 fields. The money prizes are huge – a combined of $12,500,000, and a winning share of $2,250,000.

The last winner of the big prize is Gary Woodland, who made it to the first place last year with a score of 271 and -13 par. Second was Brooks Koepka, who won it in 2018.

What we also know is that we will not have qualifiers for this edition, for sanitary reasons, but all the big names will be present at the show, including the legend Tiger Woods and the winners of US Open during the past 10 years.

So, who are the favorites for this year’s edition? Here are the odds, according to Unibet, a top licensed New Jersey operator:

Bryson DeChambeau (+800)

DeChambeau hasn’t yet won any US Open, but he is one of the few players in history winning the CNAA Division I championship and the US Amateur in the same year. He did this in 2015, at 21 years. He will turn 27 just before the tournament, and now stands on his highest ranking, 5th

Rory McIlroy (+800)

Sharing the top favorite’s position is Rory McIlroy, who already is a big name in the history of golf. The Norther Irish won the US Open in 2011, at 22 years old, and he spent 106 weeks as the number one player in the world – the third overall longest time on No.1 place. Having won also the 2012 and 2014 PGA championships, and the 2014 Open championship, McIlroy needs only a win at the Masters to complete his career grand slam.

Brooks Koepka (+1000)

Another big name is Brooks Koepka, who won the US Open in 2017 and 2018, and the PGA championship in 2018 and 2019 – his wins in 2018 marked the first such double since Tiger Woods in 2000. He reached the number one spot and stood there for 47 weeks. Koepka is the third favorite for this year.

Dustin Johnson (+1100)

Another US Open winner, this time for the 2016 edition, Johnson is the fourth when it comes to winning odds. He spent 91 weeks on the No.1 place, of which 64 where consecutive – both numbers rank 5th in their respective rankings all time. He also finished second at last year’s PGA championship.

Jon Rahm (+1200)

The 25 year old Spanish has been the world’s number one two weeks, until August 1st. His best result at a major championship was the fourth place in 2018, at the Masters tournament. Now, he is the fifth favorite for the US Open.

Tiger Woods (+1400)

No introduction needed here, for one of the greatest golf players of all times, and one of the most famous athletes in history. He turned pro 24 years ago, and he broke records ever since. Tiger Woods won the US Open three times, in 2000, 2002 and 2008, and now is the sixth favorite of the bookmakers to do it again.

Justin Thomas (+1800)

The current number one, Thomas won the PGA championship in 2017, but didn’t came close to winning the US Open until now. He has 5 overall weeks as No. 1, and now is the seventh favorite to win the title.

Patrick Cantlay (+2000)

Cantlay was number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, and his amateur career was quite impressive. He hasn’t yet recorded a significant finish at a major tournament, and his highest ranking is 6, which currently holds. He is the eighth favorite at winning the US Open.

While the event will go on without on-site fans, the local authorities – voiced by New York Gov. Andrew Como – hope that this tournament “will help restore a sense of normalcy as we build back better than before”.
