It is the time of the year for the Oscars. However, due to the pandemic situation, the annual movie awards are about two months late. As such, the Oscar nominations 2021 were announced in the middle of March rather than January. The show will be hosted on 25th April.

As is the case with every year, there were both expected events and completely surprising exclusions. However, the consensus about the nominations is mostly positive.

The Oscar Nominations 2021 Are:

The nominations have been largely accused of not being diverse enough for the past few years. In 2020, there had been only one nomination for an actor/actress of color which was Cynthia Erivo. In the Oscar nominations 2021, there are nine acting nominees, of the 20 possible. This is a record in diversity for the Oscars. Furthermore, there is an Asian-American for the first time: Steven Yeun for the film Minari. Others are Andra Day, Leslie Odom Jr., Yuh-Jung Youn, Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis, Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya, and Riz Ahmed.

This is also the first time that two women directors have made it to the nominations list at the same time. They are Emerald Fennell, for the film Promising Young Woman, and Chloe Zhao, for her Nomadland. Zhao is also non-white. This makes up for two of the five nominations available in the category of direction. Zhao had won the Golden Globe for his direction.

The Oscar nominations 2021 in the documentary category have been received as orthodox with more experimental ones missing out. Sound of Metal has been a wildcard entry into the Oscars. Riz Ahmed’s performance as the lead has undeniably drawn the judges into realizing just how good the film is. It has been nominated for six categories.

Netflix continued its impressive run in the Oscars with being nominated in all but two of the categories. Mank is the one with the most nominations, 10. On the other hand, Da 5 Bloods has lost out completely. Both Sacha Baron Cohen’s film and Pinocchio got surprising and welcome nominations.
