Mayor Eric Adams firmly believes that New York City is winning the war against the more contagious variety of COVID-19 that is currently the cause of the spike in positive cases throughout the US. The average number of cases for a week has dropped below 20,000 in NYC. That is less than half the figure witnessed at the beginning of January.

Eric Adams said that the city was winning the war as the cases saw a downward trend. At a press conference, Eric Adams pointed out that along with the drop in fresh cases, there has also been a drop in hospitalizations, which has fallen from 6,500 cases to 5,800 at present in less than a week.

Eric Adams said that we need to be clear that we are winning the war because of our resilience.  Areas most affected by the Omicron variant have seen a slow-down in the fresh number of cases. Other countries that initially reported a spurt in fresh cases such as the UK and South Africa have also reported a drop in the number of fresh cases and hospitalizations.

Eric Adams: Health Officials Have Also Opined A Sharp Drop In Cases But Advised Caution

Health experts are also of the opinion that cases of the Omicron variant will go down as quickly as it spreads through the nation. They have said they expected the figures to go down significantly by February or March.

Over the last week, the number of fresh cases stood at 685,000 each day. But that has been a 10% drop over the previous week. But city officials have warned residents of the crowded city to be vigilant against any further increase in the rate of contagion.

The Health Commissioner of New York, Dr. Dave Chokshi said that it was clear that these numbers are extremely high and indicate that there continued to be widespread community transmission. He said that they would need to closely follow trends before easing up on restrictions.
