Coronavirus: Newsom announces $125M fund for undocumented immigrants amid coronavirus emergency

A hefty sum of $125 million was announced by Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, in the form of disaster relief assistance for the working Californians. It was so mean to provide financial assistance to the COVID-19 affected undocumented migrants in California.

Newsom reveals that a sum of $75 million will be provided by the state while $50 million will be raised by foundations concerned with immigration issues such as Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees. 

In a written statement, Newsom celebrates the diversity at the heart of California which keeps it stronger and makes it resilient. Inspiring a sense of communal harmony, Newsom writes, “We are in this together.”

The fund of $75 million provided by the state is allocated for the undocumented Californians who cannot apply for benefits such as unemployment insurance or disaster relief. 

The application for the support will be accepted starting next month.

A community-based model of regional nonprofits with expertise and experience serving undocumented communities” will be used to disperse the funds. Details and resource guides developed by the state will provide further details.
