Max von Sydow, the Swedish actor who made his name in a progression of milestone films with Ingmar Bergman before advancing to worldwide fame, has passed on in France. He was 90.

Sydow’s most famous job was in Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957), in which he plays chess with Death. He likewise carried huge nearness and gravity to jobs, for example, Jesus Christ in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), a bound minister in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, and a mentally bombastic craftsman in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters (1986).

All the more as of late, he showed up in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and on Game of Thrones as the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven.

The news was broken on Monday by his significant other, the maker Catherine Brelet, who told Paris Match: “It is with a messed up heart and with vast trouble that we have the outrageous torment of reporting the takeoff of Max von Sydow on 8 March 2020.”

Tributes were paid to Von Sydow on Twitter, with Edgar Wright considering him a “divine being” who “changed the substance of universal film”.
