According to three people familiar with her thinking, Fani Willis, the embattled district attorney for Fulton County, intends to move forward with her goal of putting Donald Trump on trial before the November election. She plans to ask the Georgia criminal case judge to set a trial date as early as this summer.

In light of Fani Willis‘s difficulties in resuming the case after a two-month diversion that exposed embarrassing details of her personal life, harming her credibility with Judge Scott McAfee and making her politically vulnerable ahead of her reelection campaign in November, this is a risky move.

Did Fani Willis Benefit Monetarily From Her Relationship With Wade?

Due to her intimate relationship with lead prosecutor Nathan Wade, who resigned last Friday after receiving harsh criticism from McAfee that called into doubt both Wade and Willis’s judgment, Willis almost missed being disqualified. McAfee accepted Trump and his co-defendants’ requests to file an appeal on Wednesday, so Fani Willis’s disqualification remains a possibility. Republicans in Georgia are still looking into claims that Willis benefited monetarily from her friendship with Wade. A state Senate committee intends to convene many times to hear from more witnesses, and it may utilize its subpoena authority to obtain fresh information.

Willis’s unwavering political position has also been called into question. This month, Christian Wise Smith, a Democrat and former Atlanta solicitor and prosecutor for Fulton County, started a campaign to oppose Willis in the primary scheduled for May 21.
