Trump will not visit Capitol to pay respects to civil rights icon John Lewis

After the commencement of the six-day ceremony to honor the late activist John Lewis, there were certainly some eyes who expected Donald Trump to pay respects to the revered figure.

However, Trump reportedly will not visit the Capitol for the same.

The casket of Rep. John Lewis has arrived at the Capitol and would be kept on the top of Capitol steps later Monday for the public to pay their respects.

Flags at the White House have been ordered to fly at half staff to honor Lewis, but little has been said about his death publicly by Trump.

When asked by reporters, Trump said, “I won’t be going, no,” while departing on a trip to North Carolina.

Vice President Pence and second lady Karen Pence are to visit Monday evening, after the former’s return from the Florida trip.

Rep. John Lewis was a towering figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a Democratic Congressman and committed six decades of his life to non-violent protests against the injustice perpetrated in the society.

He also led in 1965 the Selma to Montgomery marches across Edmund Pettus Bridge.

He passed away at 80 on the Seventeenth of July due to Cancer. He is survived by a family of a son, six siblings, and thirty nephews and nieces.
