The United States Is Providing Ukraine With Cluster Bombs Despite International Concerns

Cluster Bombs

The United States of America is providing war-torn Ukraine with highly controversial cluster bombs. This move comes as a defensive assist from both Canada and the US. Other NATO nations have raised concerns and questions on the cluster bombs, which might adversely affect vast civilian regions, causing devastation if put to use. President Joe Biden, before attending the NATO Summit in Lithuania later this week, had stopped at the United Kingdom and met Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on July 10.

According to sources, the issues of cluster bombs and ammunition were discussed by the two world leaders. On the weapon move, the United Kingdom had refrained from criticizing the US, while other nations have raised concerns on the cluster bomb issue.

What Are Cluster Bombs?

With the issue of the US providing Ukraine with cluster bombs, interest has grown in what type of weapons they are. A cluster bomb is a weapon that releases smaller bomblets that can cause devastation in a large area. Another complication with cluster munition is that almost 40% of these bomblets fail to explode and scatter on a large area, which can later explode unexpectedly causing civilian life loss.

Allies of the United States like New Zealand have voiced their concerns about supplying Ukraine with cluster bombs, which can cause fatal outcomes for civilians. President Biden had earlier stated in an interview with CNN that it was difficult to take. While Jake Sullivan, US Security Adviser has defended the US move saying that Ukraine in its present state, when Russia is still continuing to militarily advance, cannot be left defenseless. This issue will certainly be discussed among the NATO nations at the upcoming Summit in Lithuania.
