Before hitting on the jackpot of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda was known for her creation “In The Heights”.
He wrote the music and the lyrics for this Grammy and Tony award-winning musical. Broadway was host to this musical from 2008 to 2011. Come 26th June 2020, fans will finally get the movie version of the same, starring Anthony Ramos, also from Hamilton.
The movie is directed by Jon M. Chu and the screenplay is by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Hudes also wrote the book version of the musical on Broadway. And its first full-length trailer has now been released. The setting is New York’s Washington Heights and it tells the story of the son of an immigrant and their community over the course of 3 eventful days. Miranda portrayed this role on Broadway but Ramos takes over in the film.
Anthony Ramos is a gifted singer who portrayed John Laurens and Philip Hamilton on the Broadway version. He released his first album, “The Good & The Bad” this fall.
The story is about a block that is disappearing. The characters here are dealing with family issues, along with issues in love and community. Gentrification comes for their Latino neighborhood and they are in it together. The musical received much acclaim for countering Latino stereotypes. An example would be Nina who is an ambitious and studious young girl from this Latino community. She ends up going to Stanford University.

Chu is confident after the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Black Panther” that this too shall be a favorite with the audience. The two films had minorities dominating the scene and again the director is highlighting yet another underrepresented community: Latinos.
The trailer of “In The Heights” seems as promising as the Broadway musical. The film, releasing on 26th June 2020 is produced under Warner Bros. Pictures.
