49ers Land Randy Gregory: Acquire Veteran Pass Rushers From Broncos In Exchange For 2024 Pick

Randy Gregory

The 49ers have struck a deal with the Broncos that has brought Randy Gregory to the Bay Area. The San Francisco team acquired the veteran edge-rusher and a 7th-round pick from the Broncos for a 6th-round pick, both from 2024.

Even since Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch arrived as coach and general manager, they have spent heavily in bolstering the team’s defensive line. They were at it again on Friday with the decision to bring in Randy Gregory. Shanahan said that Randy Gregory was the best rusher they had faced when they played the Broncos in Dallas. The 49ers coach said that Gregory’s inclusion was expected to make it better. He said that there was no hesitation in taking the decision to include him in the team.

Economics Played A Key Part In The Randy Gregory Deal

Money was one of the key parts of the deal. The Denver team will continue to pay Randy Gregory around $10 M for the remaining season. The 49ers will at the same time give him the minimum amount. There are 3 years to go on the veteran’s deal, but they are not guaranteed beyond this year. The San Francisco team has close to $40 M in players’ salary cap. They expect to roll a major part of it in the coming years. More key players could come in, including Brandon Aiyuk as a wideout. He is expected to play in the 5th season of his 2024 rookie deal.

Randy Gregory was at the 49ers camp on Friday and met the team and coach Shanahan. He showed up at practice and took part in the physical. Randy was back in Denver but will not be with the team in the showdown on Sunday night against the Cowboys. Kerry Hyder Jr, the 49ers defensive lineman, is expected to be released to bring in Randy Gregory. The move could become official by Saturday.
