On Monday, world no. 1 Novak Djokovic announced that he was sitting out the upcoming Western & Southern Open. This means his next action will most probably be at the United States Open. It will be his final Grand Slam for the calendar year.

Novak Djokovic Needs To Rest

Novak Djokovic, who is currently the topmost ranked tennis player, took to social media to make the announcement. He said that he needs more time to recuperate and recover. The journey between Australia and Tokyo had been quite taxing for him,

In July, he became the grass-court champion as well by becoming the champion at Wimbledon. This is the first time any man has won the starting 3 major championships in tennis since 1969 when Rod Laver won all four in a single season.

Following Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic played in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics chasing the Golden Slam. It is the gold medal in singles along with all 4 major championships in one. However, he did not even finish on the podium in Japan.

The Serbian, who is now 34, was defeated by Alexander Zverev of Germany in the semifinals of the singles event. In the match for the bronze medal, he succumbed to Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain. After the bronze defeat, Djokovic had said that he had failed to deliver in the two matches, primarily because of exhaustion.

The Open of Western & Southern starts in the upcoming weekend. The United States Open’s main draw starts on 30th August. In the previous year, Novak Djokovic had his second Western & Southern title.
