NHL Draft Lottery

The 2021 NHL Draft Lottery comprised the 15 NHL teams that failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And despite the expanded franchise, the No.1 overall pick now is with the least performing team in 2020-21.

The Philadelphia Flyers ended with the Number 13 overall NHL draft lottery pick. The first No.1 overall pick in the NHL Draft Lottery went to the Buffalo Sabres. They edged out the Anaheim Ducks and the Seattle Kraken for the topmost selection in the draft scheduled for late July. They will respectively hold the number 3 and number 2 overall picks

The Philadelphia Flyers had a 3.8% chance to emerge into the two 2 draft order. They were at 14th but climbed up a spot due to the suspension of the Arizona Coyotes. They had a 1.8% chance for the Number 1 Jackpot. For the Number 2 Pick, they had a 2% chance.

The Flyers have 7 picks for the 21 draft. They had it bad in the 2020-21 season and are under pressure to come back into contention in the 2021-22 season

The Sabres retained the No.1 spot for the second time in 4 years, having last held it in 2018. They finished with a low of 15 wins in 56 games with just 37 points.

Coyotes Out Of The NHL Draft Lottery

The Arizona Coyotes were forced to lose the draft pick in the first round. They had been sanctioned for violating NHL Combine testing rules. Other teams moved up one spot as a result, in the absence of the Coyotes.

There are no limits on any of the 15 teams in the lottery except the Coyotes. There will be two new limits imposed to favor the poor-performing teams next season. The team that wins the lottery cannot move more than 10 spots up. A team cannot win the lottery more than two times in 5 years.

The NHL Draft Lottery will take place on July 23 & 24, a month after the normal date. The delay has been prompted by the pandemic, which forced the NHL season into a late finish, thus delaying the whole process.
