Uruguay Beats Ghana In Grudge Rematch However Both Eliminated From The Group

Uruguay

Ghana’s exit from the World Cup in 2010 has been caused by Uruguay’s star forward Luiz Suarez that year who trying to prevent a goal stopped the ball with his hand that stopped Ghana’s progress in the world cup. Well, it seems like Ghana had hold on to the grudge ever since, and this year in the Qatar World Cup, they have finally taken their revenge. Ghana in a shocking last round match up against Group H has taken the Latin American footballing giants out of the World Cup with them.

However, Ghana haven’t done things any differently than in that match twelve years earlier. They were qualifying for the RO16 with Portugal and Uruguay weren’t before the match started. In fact Ghana only needed a win, but a draw would have worked for them too as long as Portugal was beating South Korea.

However, Andre Ayew missed the penalty just like Asamoah Gyan missed after the Suarez handball in 2010 World Cup. Then the Latin American team started their game where they just needed a win to qualify.

Uruguay Beats Ghana: Both Out Of The Group Stages Of The World Cup

Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored a brace in the 1st half to give Suarez and Co. the victory, but South Korea’s unexpected 2-1 victory over Portugal allowed it to advance on goals scored rather than guaranteeing Uruguay a spot in the round of 16.

After being dealt a devastating blow by that penalty miss as well as the quick-fire double by De Arrascaeta, Ghana was never able to bounce back as Uruguay cruised through the 2nd half. 5 minutes before the game’s conclusion, word of South Korea’s victory spread around the stadium, prompting Uruguay to go on the attack once more.

But the breakthrough never materialized, and for the 1st time until 2002, Uruguay is eliminated from the World Cup inside the group stage.

The fact that Suárez, the antagonist in Ghana’s 2010 match, broke down in tears as Uruguay’s players lost control and surrounded and physically assaulted the referees as they left the field, will provide some tiny solace to Ghana.
