New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has reiterated his support for former President Trump, despite acknowledging Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Sununu engaged in a back-and-forth with co-anchor George Stephanopoulos, defending his endorsement of Trump while condemning his actions leading up to the attack.

Sununu affirmed his previous statement that Trump’s “rhetoric and actions contributed to the insurrection.” He emphasized his disapproval of Trump’s denial of the 2020 election results but stated his endorsement stems from a desire for a Republican administration that prioritizes states’ and individual rights.
Expressing his focus on electing Republicans rather than Trump himself, Sununu clarified that his support extends to the party’s agenda, including promoting states’ autonomy and individual freedoms.
Despite previously backing former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Republican primaries and expressing criticism of Trump, Sununu emphasized the importance of supporting the Republican ticket in the upcoming elections.
Stephanopoulos pressed Sununu on whether a president involved in an insurrection should be reelected, to which Sununu responded by highlighting broader public sentiment and the desire for political change across the nation.
In reaffirming his support for the Republican party, Sununu stressed the significance of a unified party approach in securing victories at all levels of government.
