Al Roker stunned his co-hosts on Thursday by making a cameo barely a month after having knee replacement surgery.

Al emerged from backstage during a piece for National Wine Day in the Third Hour, laughing as he strode out with a cane. Say “Jesus Christ!” “No!” exclaimed Craig Melvin as Dylan Dreyer screamed. Sheinelle Jones appeared to be in astonishment when Al approached her while sporting a large grin and giving hugs all the way.

In a subsequent broadcast, the hosts discussed the surprise, with Craig summarizing the experience by saying, “Al Roker, he just stunned us with a surprise pop-in.” Naturally, we weren’t anticipating that, said Craig.

Al Roker Recovered Well From Knee-Surgery

The hosts, according to Sheinelle, were anticipating seeing him later in the day rather than during a live broadcast. On May 9, the weatherman had a complete knee replacement. Al, 68, revealed during a video conversation on May 15 that he underwent a knee replacement 23 years earlier.

“This one is a little trickier since it was a revision, as they say. One day following the treatment, Al told his hosts that he was walking but had been attempting to rest and take a break at home. In addition, a titanium cone is there for the bone to develop around. Therefore, it has taken extra work.

Al Roker claimed that while the procedure wasn’t simple, he felt well enough to experiment with some cuisine in the kitchen, which he then uploaded on Instagram, much to the dismay of his physician.

Al laughed and continued, “My doc saw what I posted on Instagram and he states, ‘No, we’re not engaging in that. Therefore, the key is to keep the knee elevated, iced and immobilized. Al stated that to resume his walking routine, he would engage in physical therapy three days a week.
