After two close calls at Selhurst Park with the crossbar, Liverpool’s home form took a step back in the result of a scoreless draw with Crystal Palace.

After a 5-2 setback to Real Madrid on Tuesday night, Jurgen Klopp’s team returned to Premier League action hoping to rebuild confidence. Instead, Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp labeled them as “fragile.”

Many good chances were squandered, including a first-half header by Diogo Jota that hit the crossbar and a second-half attempt by Mohamed Salah that hit the post. Yet, Crystal Palace seldom sat back and impressed for extended periods; despite some troublesome moments from Liverpool’s defense, they did not record a single shot on goal.

Liverpool Unable To Reach Top 4

Jean-Philippe Mateta, given a golden opportunity to put his team ahead after receiving a poor pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, also missed the target with a shot. Michael Olise and Marc Guehi both performed admirably. In the end, neither side could claim victory. Liverpool, now in seventh position, is seven points behind the top four teams.

To add insult to injury, Palace has now drawn three straight Premier League matches and has not moved in the standings. Early on, there was a string of close calls that came to define the game. A chance for Crystal Palace arose after Alexander-clumsy Arnold’s pass to Jordan Henderson was intercepted by Mateta, but Alisson sent Mateta’s chipped attempt wide. Returning Liverpool player Jota then had two close calls, the first a volley that was straight at Vicente Guaita, the second a close-range header that hit the crossbar from an acute angle.

Just before the break, Crystal Palace once again took advantage of a porous Liverpool defense to generate a fantastic opportunity, but this time Guehi’s header went just wide of the goal after a great corner by Olise.
