Real Madrid almost did enough to ensure a second victory against Atletico Madrid, their city rivals, within a month. It would have also let the Spanish giants take a 4-point lead at the top of La Liga. However, they just could not manage it. The improvised defense fielded by Madrid faltered at the last hurdle. As such, Atletico squeezed in an equalizer in the dying minutes of the game to end the game 1-1 on February 4th.

Real Madrid Still Has A Lot To Do To Secure The League

When the clock timed three minutes into stoppage time, Marcos Llorente headed in Atletico Madrid’s equalizer. Brahim Diaz had scored for Real Madrid in the beginning 45 minutes, putting the hosts ahead at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Atletico’s late goal stopped Real Madrid from taking advantage of the points dropped by second-placed Girona as they played out a goalless draw against Real Sociedad on February 3rd. Next week, Real Madrid will face Girona. Currently, Madrid has two points over Girona.

Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Madrid, said that his side played a very good game and they were controlling the match. As such, he chalked up the late concession to being unlucky. However, he did explain that the squad was aware of the lack of height in the side’s defense. Ancelotti’s defense was depleted, to say the least, due to several injuries. As such, Dani Carvajal, a right back, had to slot into the central defender role, with Nacho Fernandez as company.

There was only a minute left when Atletico’s final cross was floated inside. The duo failed to successfully keep it out, and Memphis Depay managed to head it goal-wards. Llorente then came in and scored, but even then it hit the crossbar before it went in.
