Venice Film Festival 2020: Competition Light On Studios, Strong On Global Arthouse & Women Directors – Full List

Venice Film Festival has announced its lineup for the 77th edition for the year 2020. The lineup is light on studio titles this year with only Nomadland(Searchlight) and The World To Come(Sony) appearing on the list, both directed by women – Mona Fastvold and Chloé Zhao , respectively.

The lineup features more films that are backed by women filmmakers than in the past. Venice chief Alberto Barbera stated they were “selected exclusively on the basis of their quality and not as a result of gender protocols.”

Venice had come under fire last year for having only two women in the competition while this year it has increased to eighteen.

Venice Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the world. In recent years, it has plastered its status as the best launchpad for awards. But the current situation worldwide, the 2020 festival will probably be rather muted.

Nomadland’s Zhao and star Frances McDormand will appear virtually.

Bron’s Pieces Of A Woman, The World To Come, Shia LaBeouf’s Pieces Of A Woman, and Casey Affleck’s The World To Come are some of the movies that will be featured in the Festival in Lido, Rome.

Call Me By Your Name fame Luca Guadagnino returns with Salvatore, while Shoemaker Of Dreams’ Alex Gibney and Abel Ferrara is also returning with Crazy, Not Insane, and Sportin’ Life, respectively.
