The Biden administration has decided to lift its travel restrictions on eight countries in the Southern African hemisphere on the 31st of December. This was reported by Kevin Munoz, the assistant press secretary at the White House, on Friday.

The restrictions were put up to slow down the spread of the new omicron variant in the United States, and the restrictions were then applied to South Africa– where the variant was detected the earliest, along with the countries of Botswana, Eswatini, Malawi, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Most of the noncitizens that have been a part of these countries within the last 14 days have not been granted access to enter the United States.

Travel Restrictions Lifted; Yet Government Advises Against It

This news from the White House comes after a few other countries like Canada went about dropping similar travel restrictions. Earlier, President Joe Biden stated that he was considering reversing the restrictions that the country enacted in the previous month shortly before lifting the bans against a few other countries.

In an address to the nation on Tuesday, Biden stated that the administration had put up the travel restrictions to just see how much time they had before it would hit the States- which would then lead to government restrictions by looking at what’s happening in other countries, but that is a thing of the past.

Despite the travel restrictions being lifted by the administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still advise against travel to the eight countries since they have been considered to be extremely at risk.
