After Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal in London, Liverpool’s advantage in the Premier League is now just two points. This puts Manchester City in the position of controlling to win the trophy for the fourth consecutive year. At the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners controlled the game from the off, with Bukayo Saka giving the home team the lead after only 14 minutes. As the opening period went on, Mikel Arteta’s team appeared to be winning, but Gabriel Magalhães, an Arsenal defender, scored an own goal shortly before halftime to level the scores and send the two teams to the locker rooms.

Would Manchester City Be Able To Catch Up With Arsenal?

However, Arsenal took the lead back after the interval when Virgil van Dijk, a defender, and Liverpool goalie Alisson Becker collided. With Alisson on the field, Gabriel Martinelli was ready to seize the loose ball and roll it into an empty net. After receiving his second warning of the match, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté was eventually sent off with a red card.

Arsenal’s third goal was added in stoppage time by replacement Leandro Trossard, concluding a terrible day for the visitors. With their victory, Arsenal moved up to exclusive control of the second spot behind the Reds, passing City in the process. However, City, in third position, has appeared in two fewer matches than Arsenal or Liverpool.

If they do, City would catch up to Arsenal in terms of points.  In terms of keeping the title, they would also be in charge of their fate. Following Liverpool’s defeat on Sunday, which was only their second league loss of the season, City would win the Premier League by one point if Guardiola and company win all 17 of their remaining games and Jürgen Klopp’s Reds win every one of their last 15 games. On March 9 at Anfield, Liverpool and Manchester City will play their last match of the season.
