VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has named Archbishop Gregory J. Hartmayer as the new pioneer of the Catholic Church in Atlanta.

Hartmayer, 68, replaces Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who took over as leader of the congregation in Washington, D.C. in the aftermath of the 2018 explosion of the sex abuse and coverup outrage.

Hartmayer, a Conventual Franciscan, has been minister of Savannah, Georgia since 2011.

A local of Buffalo, New York, Hartmayer functioned as a direction advocate, school chief, and educator in an assortment of Catholic schools in Baltimore, New York and Florida.

Gregory was moved to Washington in April 2019 after Cardinal Donald Wuerl had to resign ahead of schedule after he lost the trust of his clerics and dependable over his job in the outrage over ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.
