Disney Animations announced in a statement made on February 9th, 2021, that they are going to close Blue Sky Studios, the once-dominant animation house under 20th Century Fox animation.

The popular animation studio has developed 13 feature-length films that include the all-time favorite, the Ice Age franchise. The former Fox animation house used to gross over $5.9 billion for Disney Animations. But according to the latest news, Disney is going to shut down the animation owing to the pandemic-oriented crisis.

The Blue Sky Studios was acquired by the Walt Disney Company as part of their 2019 acquisition of the entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox, which concluded on March 20, 2019. However, the last year has not been a year of good fortune for the animation giant. It is evident after Disney also announced the closure of theme parks and cruise line dockings.

Blue Sky Studios’ Last Film Will Not Make It To The Screens

The economic impact of the global pandemic also hit the banks of the animation giant. This made it impossible for Disney to sustain three animation studios for feature films. Along with the Blue Sky Studios, Disney has had to let go of several other assets to get through the pandemic crisis.

Disney announced that Blue Sky Studios’ last functional day will be in April. A total of 450 employees will be affected owing to this decision. However, Disney claims that they will cooperate with the employees to shift them to Greenwich CT studio or explore other possibilities that can be worked out internally.

In addition to this, a Disney spokesperson informed the press that Blue Sky Studios’ president and co-president Andrew Millstein and Rob Baird will also exit from the studio after its closure. The movie-in-progress, ‘Nimona’ that still has 10 months of production left will also be abandoned by Disney.
