Judge Tanya Chutkan Throws Out Trump’s Demand That She Steps Down

Tanya Chutkan

Judge Tanya Chutkan has thrown out allegations from the legal team guiding Donald Trump that she was not fairly steering his trial. The twice-impeached former president faces federal charges of conspiring to upturn the presidential elections in 2020. Judge Tanya Chutkan of the Washington Federal Court gave a strongly worded rejection of the claims by Trump’s legal team that the judge had been biased against Trump in her statements in her ruling in two earlier cases linked to the Capitol inquisition and riots by a mob owing allegiance to the disgraced president.

Judge Tanya Chutkan has severely chided the former president’s lawyers for making wild allegations. She also stressed that her statements had not revealed any unfair disposition towards the former president that would necessitate a step as extraordinary as forcing her to step down from the present case.

The judge wrote that her earlier statements do not at any stage project any deep bias that would render it impossible to give a fair judgment. Attempting to exclude a sitting judge is always a precarious and challenging move by a defense team. And if it is unsuccessful, as it always is, could annoy the judge tasked with making a crucial decision in critical cases.

Trump Faces Four Charges In Judge Tanya Chutkan’s Court

Judge Tanya Chutkan has also ruled against Trump in a separate January 6 case when he sought to block the release of documents linked to the investigation citing ‘executive privilege.’

She has repeatedly warned that attempts to violently overthrow the government, stop the peaceful transition of power, and assault law officers would be met with ‘absolute certain punishment.’ Trump faces four counts linked with his attempts to upturn the election results in 2020. He has been portrayed as the kingpin of the conspiracy. Special counsel Jack Smith has put the former president at the core of the 3 conspiracies leading to the January 6 uprising.

Trump also faces the charge that he co-conspired with six others, who could also be indicted in the future. In her statement, Judge Tanya Chutkan noted that attempts to disqualify a judge were akin to judge shopping. But she also noted that the defense could demand a judge rescue themselves if they appeared biased.
